Black Innovation’s Frontline: We Tha Plug, Providing Support for Black & Latinx Founders

BusinessFeatured
Luis Martinez Founder of We Tha Plug

Afro-Latino Luis Martinez Luis is an advocate, networker, and ecosystem builder in tech and innovation.

As CEO and Founder of We Tha Plug, Martinez is working tirelessly to create an ecosystem geared specifically toward Black, Latinx, and other underserved entrepreneurs. Recognizing that people are the most critical connection point, We Tha Plug works to address the many challenges those founders face in terms of access, information, and training.

Martinez describes We Tha Plug as a passion project, aiming to intentionally support Black and Hispanic entrepreneurs in the San Diego tech community and across the country.

UrbanGeekz caught up with Black Innovation Alliance founding member Martinez to find out more about his work.

UrbanGeekz: Describe We Tha Plug’s current role?

Luis Martinez: As Founder & CEO of We Tha Plug, which works primarily with Minority Tech Entrepreneurs in San Diego & beyond to help build & scale their companies through infrastructure, resources, networking & access to capital. We Tha Plug is dedicated to bridging the relationship divide that hinders the success of numerous talented entrepreneurs, particularly those from marginalized communities such as people of color and women, or those not situated in innovation hubs. Our mission is to create a level playing field where every entrepreneur, regardless of their background or geographical location, has the opportunity to forge the crucial connections necessary for their prosperity. In doing so, we are constructing the Build in San Diego Initiative for a more resilient and flourishing ecosystem that benefits all.

UrbanGeekz: What is your company’s unique value proposition that makes it stand out from the competition?

Luis Martinez: We Tha Plug stands out from the competition as the sole Entrepreneur Serving Organization exclusively committed to supporting minority high-growth tech companies in San Diego and beyond. Our unique value proposition lies in our targeted focus on underrepresented entrepreneurs. With a broad network spanning over 10K individuals globally, including entrepreneurs, investors, and ecosystem builders, we provide a dynamic platform for fostering connections, growth, and opportunities for minority-led tech ventures.

UrbanGeekz: How has BIA supported you on a personal and/or professional level?

As CEO and Founder of We Tha Plug, Luis Martinez is working tirelessly to create an ecosystem geared specifically toward Black, Latino, and other underserved entrepreneurs. Recognizing that people are the most critical connection point, We Tha Plug works to address the many challenges those founders face in terms of access, information, and training.

Luis Martinez: BIA has supported We Tha Plug with opportunities to connect with other ecosystem builders & funders who see the value in helping you build an ecosystem in your city.

UrbanGeekz: What inspired you to start your business?

The opportunity to build a diverse ecosystem in San Diego. San Diego is not diverse when it comes to access to building businesses and accessing resources. I wanted the opportunity to build something sustainable for both the Black & Hispanic communities in San Diego.

UrbanGeekz: Are there any milestones you have achieved that you would like to share?

Luis Martinez: Sure, I am in the process of trying to build an innovation lab in San Diego for the communities we serve. We are also hosting our inaugural Plug X Summit which will be virtual in 2024 but will be in-person for 2025 in San Diego. Simultaneously, I’m announcing our Build in San Diego Initiative to build an ecosystem.
