Twitch star Kai Cenat gave an update on his Nigerian school project at his Mafiathon 3 livestream, confirming that the $5 million project is underway.

The announcement follows months of speculation and questions from fans about the initiative. He confirmed that the new campus has been moved to Yaba after construction challenges in Makoko.

Clarifying the Status of the New School in Nigeria

Cenat made the promise during his visit to Nigeria in March 2024, after he was taken to the Makoko Children’s Development Foundation School. After seeing the state of the building, with hundreds of students crammed into a single classroom, he pledged to help them in any way he could.

“Whatever they tell me you guys need, we’re gonna make sure you guys have it,” he said at the time. Upon returning to America, he expanded that commitment, announcing plans to build an entirely new school to serve the students and community of Makoko better.

Over the following year, fans of the streamer repeatedly asked for updates as the project remained largely unreported, while donations continued to accumulate. So during the recent Mafiathon 3, Cenat provided new details about the project.

Two representatives working on the project, Fanny Moral with Enko Education of South Africa, and Chinedum Umeche, a partner with Banwo & Ighodalo of Nigeria, shared information on the school’s development

The group emphasized that constructing a fully operational school takes time, considering construction, curriculum, and staff. Essentially, they aim for this school “to last for a long time,” as Cenat stressed. “Beyond me, beyond streaming.”

“From land purchase and approvals to construction, staffing, and curriculum,” there’s a great deal involved, as an accompanying slideshow showed. The first factor has been the main reason for delays, they explained, due to the “topography, it’s difficult to build a school in that community.”

The project’s original location, Makoko, Lagos — often called the “Venice of Africa” because of its waterways and buildings on stilts or floating — posed construction challenges, according to Dexerto.

Consequently, the team moved the school to nearby Yaba, Lagos. Students from Makoko will continue to receive free education there, while others traveling from other areas will pay tuition. As part of Mafiathon 3, Cenat announced that 15% of revenue will go toward building the school in Nigeria. If he reaches 1 million Twitch subscribers, that’s roughly $750,000 for the project.

For full transparency, the Kai Cenat Foundation Inc. has been established as a public charity, ensuring all funds are accounted for and no individual can personally profit. This step addresses concerns about undisclosed charity funds. The foundation will oversee all funds, ensuring no personal profit for those involved.

Current balances show over $1.1 million in donations, with Cenat contributing more than $128,000 to equip the existing school with computers. The goal is a $5 million investment to prepare for the new school’s first day of classes. “That’s what we’re aiming for,” Cenat said, per Dexerto.
