MacKenzie Scott Crosses $1B Mark in HBCU Donations

Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott has now surpassed $1 billion in total donations to Historically Black Colleges and Universities, a major milestone in U.S. philanthropy since pledging in 2019 to give away most of her wealth.

The milestone follows a $42 million donation to Elizabeth City State University last month. The gift is the largest per-student contribution Scott has made to an HBCU to date.

“I want to express our deepest gratitude to MacKenzie Scott for this remarkable act of generosity,” said Chancellor S. Keith Hargrove Sr. during the university’s Founders Day Convocation. “Her investment affirms what we already know: that institutions like ECSU are powerful catalysts for change.”

Giving Without Strings Attached

What sets Scott’s philanthropy apart is her approach. Her donations to HBCUs are unrestricted. This means that administrators can use them as flexible resources for mission-critical needs, rather than being designated by the donor for a specific purpose. The donation could be toward scholarships, endowments, facility upgrades, or any other priority.

Recipients of her broader giving have described her style as “trust-based philanthropy,” with one nonprofit CEO noting that it “empowers organizations to determine how best to direct funds quickly and innovatively to address pressing issues.”

As Scott wrote in a 2021 post, her aim has been to “de-emphasize privileged voices” and shift attention to those directly addressing inequities: “People struggling against inequities deserve center stage in stories about change they are creating.”

A Giving Blitz Across Black Campuses

Scott’s investment in HBCUs has been sweeping in scale. In late 2025, eight HBCUs received a combined $387 million in unrestricted donations in just a matter of weeks.

Major recipients in 2025 alone included Howard University ($80 million), Prairie View A&M University ($63 million), and North Carolina A&T State University ($63 million). Additional grants went to Bowie State University ($50 million), Norfolk State University ($50 million), Winston-Salem State University ($50 million), Spelman College ($38 million), and Dillard University ($19 million).

She also donated $70 million each to the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and the United Negro College Fund in 2025. To date, Scott has now impacted more than 60 HBCUs, both through direct institutional gifts and through her massive investment in the UNCF pooled endowment fund.

Closing a Historic Funding Gap

Scott’s generosity arrives against a backdrop of decades of philanthropic neglect toward Black institutions. According to a report by Candid, HBCUs received, on average, 178 times less funding from philanthropic foundations than Ivy League institutions. During that timeframe, gifts to Ivy League colleges totaled around $5.5 billion, compared to a combined $303 million among HBCUs.

The AAUP’s Committee on Historically Black Institutions noted that Scott’s unrestricted gifts have enabled institutions to address urgent needs, including faculty hiring, technology upgrades, and scholarships.

Many recipient institutions described her gifts as the largest single donations in their histories.
