Review: Shark’s PowerDetect UV Reveal Is Built to Be Seen

Robot vacuums have become smarter, faster, and more capable. But aesthetics have often remained an afterthought.

Shark is trying to change that with the PowerDetect UV Reveal, its flagship robot vacuum and part of the new Home Luxe Collection. We got our hands on the PowerDetect UV Reveal in the Espresso finish and have been testing it to see whether premium design can make a practical appliance feel more at home in the spaces where people live.

The thinking behind the collection is simple: a robot vacuum should not look like something you need to hide in a cupboard. And honestly, sitting in the corner with its satin-finish dock, this one does not. It looks more like a small piece of furniture than an appliance, which made us far more willing to leave it out in the open.

Espresso is part of Shark’s first cross-category color collection, which the company says was developed in response to consumer frustration with the limited design choices traditionally offered by appliance brands.

Inspired by Consumer Feedback

A SharkNinja-commissioned survey of 1,000 U.S. consumers found that 55% say color impacts the emotional appeal of their home. Yet only 12% believe appliance brands get color right. The Espresso finish with satin metallic accents is designed to sit on your floor without demanding to be hidden. Multiple design publications noted the same intention: to make a robot vacuum feel less like an appliance that needs hiding and more like a natural part of the home.

The question, of course, is whether the thing actually cleans well. Let’s get into that.

Design And Aesthetics

For years, floorcare products were designed almost exclusively around utility. They were dominated by glossy black plastics, stark white finishes, and bright accent colors. Often, they were optimized for retail shelves rather than the home itself. The Luxe Collection breaks from that. Moving away from traditional harsh color tones, Shark developed a softer palette of earth tones and muted neutrals, all finished with a subtle metallic accent.

The Luxe Collection actually made us want to display the vacuum cleaner, which is about the highest compliment you can give a product in this category. Also, the launch taps into contemporary design signifiers. From a refined, subtle but distinctive palette to careful detailing and satin accents.

Shark Home’s first cross-category color collection brings elevated new finishes to two of Shark’s newest cleaning systems: the Shark® PowerDetect™ UV Reveal™ 2-in-1 robot vacuum and mop, and the Shark® PowerDetect Speed™, a lightweight cordless vacuum with an auto-empty dock.

The Espresso unit is one of four colorways available for the UV Reveal robot (alongside Ivory, Deep Harbor, and Evergreen, with Evergreen being an online-only exclusive). It is the color choice that reads most like furniture, not an appliance.

The UV Light

The UV light detects stains and residue that are completely invisible to the naked eye, dried spills, old pet accidents, the kind of grime that builds up over months. When it spots something, it goes back over that exact spot with extra scrubbing.

There is a strange sense of satisfaction in opening the app and seeing a literal report card showing where it cleaned and which spots required an extra pass. It also announces itself out loud before it starts a run, which, around pets or curious toddlers, turns into a built-in early warning system. The UV light stain detection makes this vacuum great for high-traffic floors. Also, the HEPA filtration system captures 99.97% of particles, making the unit particularly suitable for allergy sufferers and families with respiratory sensitivities. Put simply, this vacuum robot is great for families with children and pets.

But does it mop? The performance review

For the setup, the base station arrives pre-assembled, and the robot does too, so you simply click on a side brush, attach the ramp, and the rest is part of the setup process.

Vacuuming performance is where this unit really separates itself from the other robot vacuums we’ve used. It correctly identifies floor type as it moves- hard floor, carpet, or rug- and adjusts suction and brush behavior accordingly instead of running one setting across the whole house.

Obstacle handling has also improved noticeably over previous models. The robot rarely gets stuck on rug edges, thresholds, or furniture legs, which cuts down significantly on the need to intervene mid-clean.

Where it falls slightly behind is raw suction power on deep carpet. It does not match a dedicated upright vacuum with a larger motor, though that is a reasonable tradeoff given the category.

Battery life held up across multi-room runs without needing a mid-clean recharge, something that has not been consistent with other robot vacuums we have owned. Battery life comfortably covered Shark’s claimed 3,000-square-foot range per charge during our testing. The one consistent drawback worth repeating is water usage during mopping. It uses noticeably more than its competitors, enough that it is a real factor to weigh rather than a minor footnote. Also, it still uses less water than when using the traditional mop and bucket. Outside of that, it performs ahead of most robot vacuums on the market for everyday cleaning.

The downsides to be aware of

One major downside to the vacuum is the app. It is well below par as the spot cleaning option is a fixed size, it is fiddly to use, and cleaning options are restricted based on whether you want to clean your entire home or just a room. Hopefully, the app will get some good updates soon. However,  for us, it was still advantageous to use Shark PowerDetect UV Reveal over other models or even hand-cleaning floors.

The UrbanGeekz Verdict

After a month of regular use, this became the kind of appliance we simply stopped thinking about—which is probably the highest compliment a robot vacuum can receive. It maps intelligently, adapts to different floor types automatically, rarely gets stuck, and the UV stain detection genuinely catches things many robot vacuums would miss.

It sits firmly in the premium end of the market, and the app could still use some refinement. But for anyone dealing with pets, kids, heavy foot traffic, or just the daily grind of keeping floors clean, it earns its price. The vacuum currently sells for about $1300 on Amazon, but discounts are available if you shop around.
