Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals has extended its initial public offering application period by two weeks to October 27.

The company cited strong investor interest across Africa and efforts to broaden access to the share sale. It announced Monday that Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission had approved the extension for the offer, which opened on September 14 and was originally scheduled to close on October 13.

Dangote Extends IPO to Tackle Cross-Border Investment Hurdles

Dangote Petroleum Refinery’s IPO aims to raise $2.1 billion to fund the facility’s expansion, making it one of the largest share sales in African history. The offer allows retail and institutional investors to buy shares in the refinery, owned by Aliko Dangote, the richest Black billionaire.

At the time of the announcement, the refinery’s official IPO website had not updated the closing date and still listed October 13 as the deadline. The extension shows the company’s commitment to reach a wider pool of investors and underscores growing interest in the African market.

The company seeks to widen participation beyond Nigeria after securing regulatory approvals in Kenya and Uganda that allow eligible investors in those countries to participate. Kenya’s Capital Markets Authority approved a short-form prospectus for a global depository receipt arrangement on October 5, allowing eligible Kenyan investors to access the IPO through an authorized investment bank. Uganda’s Capital Markets Authority also approved the offer for promotion and distribution.

However, the process has exposed challenges for investors who want to buy shares in companies listed in other African countries. Nigerian regulators registered the IPO in Nigeria, so potential investors elsewhere must comply with their own countries’ securities regulations and use authorized investment channels. These requirements have limited access for some investors despite interest in the share sale.

Expanding Africa Investment Opportunities

This development highlights the difficulties of expanding investment opportunities across African markets, where regulatory requirements and access to licensed brokers differ. The offer comprises 4.1 billion ordinary shares priced at ₦525 each, with a minimum subscription of 10 shares worth ₦5,250.

The initiative aims to fund the expansion of one of the continent’s largest industrial projects. To facilitate participation, the company extended the subscription period by 10 more days.

This extension gives investors across Africa more time to understand and complete the steps needed to invest. The move not only invites public investment but also highlights ongoing efforts to strengthen African capital markets

By making it easier for investors to finance projects beyond their home countries, this offering marks a significant step toward fostering regional economic growth and collaboration. The official list of approved channels is still available on the Dangote Refinery IPO website.
