October 19, 2017No matter what career you are in, there will be steps you can take to move up the corporate ladder and get yourself a better-paid position. You need to consider what positions are available, and then stick to a set of principles to help you get what you want. It may be that you are naturally predisposed to some of these characteristics. For others, you may need to perfect them on your way to the top.
These are the principles you need for career success
Passion
If you aren’t passionate about what you are doing, then why are you in the profession to begin with? Yes, the money may be amazing, but if your employers don’t get a sense of passion within you, they are unlikely to give move you up in the firm. Look for a position you care about and convey your passion to those above you.
Commitment
You need to give your best to the company you work in. This might mean working long hours and taking on menial jobs that other people refuse to do. When your employer knows you are committed to doing the best job you can, no matter the sacrifice, you will prove your worth to the company.
Self-Discipline
Have you got what it takes to get to the top? Hard work and perseverance are essential, so you won’t get anywhere if you try and take shortcuts in life. You need to show stamina and backbone, being prepared to do whatever it takes to climb further, without giving up at the first hurdle because it seems insurmountable.
Integrity
You need to build a good reputation for yourself. If you regularly fall into the trap of spreading workplace gossip or telling lies to get what you want, you have no integrity. You need to be somebody who can be trusted, not only by your employers but also those around you on the shop floor. Be somebody people look up to, and not a person others secretly gossip about behind your back.
Focus
Know what it is you want and take the right steps in getting there. This may mean studying at night school to educate yourself further or taking an internet course, such as this master of laws online that can be taken part-time. You will need to get the qualifications you need, speak to the appropriate people, and do your research to help you reach your desired goal.
Patience
Success doesn’t happen overnight, so you need to practice patience. You may be doing all the right things to improve yourself and to impress your employer, but everything takes time. There will be frustration when you get passed over for promotion, especially if you have worked hard to get it. However, your employer won’t appreciate you getting angry with them. Continue to prove your worth, and you should get what you want eventually.
Courage
You will never get what you want if you don’t pursue your goals, to begin with. No matter how difficult it may be, have the courage to go out there and get what you want. This includes self-improvement, but it also includes having the nerve to go up to the appropriate people and asking them for the chance to rise higher. Wallflowers never get anywhere, so if your employer still doesn’t notice your efforts, use your voice to get their attention.
